Anticipation Wins Championships:Could Ryan Be Next?

Warner, Brady, the Manning brothers, Brees, Rodgers. Some of the greatest modern day quarterbacks to play the game and win the Super Bowl. Could Matt Ryan become the next hoist the Lombardi trophy?

We are all aware of Ryan’s 0-3 playoff record, just like we all know he didn’t play particularly well in any of them but I don’t think we should count him out just yet. In his three losses he was out played by Kurt Warner, Aaron Rodgers, and Eli Manning, all of which went on to the Super Bowl and I’m convinced Ryan isn’t too far behind them.

Does he have Rodgers arm strength? Nope. Or Manning’s family lineage? Nope. How about Warner’s veteran knowledge of the game? Again.. No. Just like his playoff record another 0-3, however he does have something they do have and it’s the ability to throw the ball with a high level of anticipation.

Since Ryan has entered the league in 2008, he has received plenty of praise on his ability to anticipate where the receiver is going to be and when he is going to make his break. After five years it is time for Atlanta, like eight of the previous 11championship teams, to cash in the quarterbacks’ skillset.  Ryan spent much of the offseason getting stronger and adding muscle to his 6’ 4” 217 pound frame, which puts him one step closer to winning his first playoff game.

Per ajc.com, receivers are noticing more zip on Ryan’s passes during training camp as the team is installing a new offense. CoachSmith is noticing his progress as well, even if we can’t see the added muscle,

“I see it in Matt’s strength. I know some of you are saying, "He doesn’t look like he’s that much bigger," but when you’re slight like Matt is and have the body type that he does, you’re working in percentages. Matt’s done a good job with his body. He looks stronger throwing the football.”

Ryan has went from a rookie in 2008 to didn’t have enough weapons to compete in 2010, then just plain poor execution in 2011. 2012 could finally be the year the Falcons capitalize on the anticipation skills and stronger arm of their signal caller like many others before him.
